We use the upvotes here on CircleCI Ideas as one factor in prioritizing new images and pre-installed software in images. Please share around this "Idea" with others for upvoting.

In the meantime, a technique that helps here is to have a step to install tools such as "git", "openssh", and "tar" before you run your checkout step. How you install those tools will depend on the package manager installed in the image you are trying to use.
